Projects
How you approach a photographic project is something individual, and yet there are certain regularities in the creative process. In one of my workshops, I formulated this as follows.
“I often notice that a certain theme keeps on cropping up in my thoughts. This is the signal for me to deal with it more intensively and the starting point for the creative process of creating a photographic concept.
Initially, preliminary thoughts about the basic idea emerge. These thoughts mature, are adjusted or make way for new approaches. This cycle repeats itself, often unconsciously, until a first concept finally develops. This serves as a guide to create photographs and align them with the basic idea. It is an iterative process that continues until the concept is finalised and the photographs have achieved the necessary substance, or it is discarded.
Sometimes it takes courage to leave a concept as it is and not tinker with it further. Similarly, it also takes courage to abandon a concept if it no longer fits. It is not always easy to recognise which path is the right one, but these very decisions shape the uniqueness of each project.”
